Haldia Selects Multiple Lummus Technologies for India’s First On-Purpose Propylene Plant and Largest Cumene and Phenol Plant

HOUSTON, November 1, 2023 – Lummus Technology, a global provider of process technologies and value-driven energy solutions, announced Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd. (HPL) will license its olefins conversion technology (OCT) and the Lummus/Versalis cumene and phenol technologies for a new plant in West Bengal, India.

Once HPL’s plant is complete, it will be India’s largest cumene and phenol plant and the nation’s first on-purpose propylene plant. The milestone will also help HPL become India’s first integrated operator in the phenolics value chain and a leader in the niche specialty chemicals segment. The integration of OCT will strengthen India’s petrochemical market by allowing production of more phenol products locally rather than by importing them.

Last August, the platform successfully co-processed Used Cooking Oil in the Low-Pressure Hydrodesulphurization Unit (LPHDS), producing SAF, meeting all product quality parameters within the SAF specifications. TotalEnergies contributed thanks to its experience and expertise to this realization.

SATORP has received International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC+) to produce SAF. With this certification, the platform will be able to respond the expected rise in SAF demand in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The sustainable aviation fuels produced from UCO reduces CO₂ emissions by at least 80% on average over the entire lifecycle, compared with their fossil equivalent.

Saudi Arabian Oil Co., DHAHRAN, 17^th Nov 2022, Aramco affiliate S-OIL to build one of the world’s largest petrochemical crackers in South Korea

Aramco is making its biggest ever investment in South Korea to develop one of the world’s largest refinery-integrated petrochemical steam crackers through its S-OIL affiliate, in line with the company’s strategy to maximize the crude to chemicals value chain.

The $7 billion Shaheen project aims to convert crude oil into petrochemical feedstock and would represent the first commercialization of Aramco and Lummus Technology’s TC2C thermal crude to chemicals technology, which increases chemical yield and reduces operating costs. It follows an earlier $4 billion investment into the first phase of the petrochemical expansion completed in 2018.

Located at S-Oil’s existing site in Ulsan, the new plant is planned to have the capacity to produce up to 3.2 million tons of petrochemicals annually and include a facility to produce high-value polymers. The project is expected to start in 2023 and be completed by 2026.

The steam cracker is expected to process by-products from crude processing, including naphtha and off-gas, to produce ethylene — a building block petrochemical used to make thousands of everyday items. The plant is also expected to produce propylene, butadiene and other basic chemicals.

Baystar (Bayport Polymers LLC) launches its new Bay 3 625,000 metric ton-per-year PE production unit. The new unit is the first of its kind in North America, bringing proprietary Borstar technology from Borealis and more than doubling Baystar’s production capacity in Pasadena, TX.

Baystar became a fully integrated polyethene manufacturer in 2022 with the start-up of its new 1 million ton-per-year ethane cracker unit in Port Arthur, Texas, which supplies ethylene feedstock to Baystar’s three PE production units.

Baystar was formed in 2018 by Novealis and TotalEnergies and operates independently as an integrated producer. The state-of-the-art Borstar technology is licensed by Borealis.

MILAN, September 5, 2023 -- LyondellBasell today started consultations with territorial trade unions for the management of potential redundancies in relation to the intended closure of the one of its two polypropylene production units at its Brindisi location in Italy. 

"After thorough analysis, we believe that closure of this unit is the most sustainable solution from a strategic and financial standpoint,” said Jim Guilfoyle, senior vice president Olefins and Polyolefins EAMEI of LyondellBasell. “We understand the intended closure may impact some of our employees. We are committed to discuss solutions with unions and social parties to support them in the best way possible. The supply to our customers will continue.”

Guilfoyle added, “This unit is the oldest of its kind in the world and it has become uncompetitive. The market environment for our polypropylene products of this Brindisi unit has become increasingly challenging, and the outlook provides little improvement. The intention of our group is to strengthen the position of the company's other assets in higher value markets.”

SABIC, a global leader in the chemicals industry, has launched a pilot project with Circularise, a blockchain software provider, to evaluate the use of their technology in tracing the carbon footprint of specific material streams from end to end. 

Generating and reporting Scope 3 emissions is notably complex and confronted by challenges with availability of reliable data. Accurate data on a company’s carbon footprint requires collaboration and data sharing across multiple value chain partners. Blockchain technology has emerged as a potentially efficient solution to improve the process that can bolster transparency and accountability while minimizing risk across supply chains.

ULTIMATE TEST CASE

The permitability of Ineos' ONE project is the ultimate test case for the future of industry in Western Europe. If such a world-scale project, which does meet the strictest climate and environmental standards, is no longer possible here, it will de facto mean the end for industry in Western Europe, a sector for which some flashing lights are already red. The squatter (Cracker) will be built anyway, if not with us, or in China, India, Malaysia or on the African continent. The demand for basic building blocks for high-performance plastics is simply too great, and will become at least a multiple by 2050. Where do we want that squatter to be built?

Interesting information for capacity modelling.

The Ineos project permit issue is part of a larger Belgian political issue, i.e. a (lack of) nitrogen decrete. The Flemish government hasn’t reached an agreement (yet) due to different interpretation of an earlier framework between the concerned political parties. One element being the different treatment between industry and the farmers. 
In this environment it is risky to kick off a project (which Ineos actually did) before having the permit in hand. The permit was not granted (yet?), based on insufficient legal ground. Last week, the Flemish government, the prime Minister, the maire of Antwerp and others politicians met with Jim Ratcliffe. They will do whatever is possible to make Project One work, but obviously subject to a legal framework to be created. To be continued.

Aramco has successfully closed a landmark transaction to acquire a 10% interest in Rongsheng Petrochemical Co. Ltd. for RMB 24.6 billion ($3.4 billion), through its subsidiary Aramco Overseas Company BV, based in the Netherlands.

The acquisition follows the signing of definitive strategic agreements by both parties announced in March this year, and includes the supply of 480,000 barrels per day of Arabian crude to the largest Chinese integrated refining and chemicals complex, which is owned by Rongsheng affiliate Zhejiang Petroleum and Chemical Co. Ltd (ZPC).

Mohammed Y. Al Qahtani, Aramco Downstream President, said, “Our strategic partnership with Rongsheng advances Aramco’s liquids to chemicals strategy while growing our presence in China and showcases our importance as a reliable supplier of crude oil. This key acquisition is an important part of Aramco’s long-term growth strategy, expanding our presence in a vital market.”

Li Shuirong, Chairman of Rongsheng, said, “The completion of this transaction marks the entry of Rongsheng and Aramco into a new era together, and also signifies an important step forward in Rongsheng’s internationalization strategy.”

Rongsheng owns a 51% equity interest in ZPC, whose complex has the capacity to process 800,000 barrels per day of crude oil and to produce 4.2 million metric tons of ethylene per year.

Innovative facility recovers 60 percent of sorting residue for recycling

Siemer's unique processing plant in Vechta ../.. sorts the fraction of packaging waste classified as inferior and prepares it for chemical recycling. It is one of the first sorting systems that can separate dirt, foreign matter and impurities from the remaining plastic parts. Their input capacity is 25,000 tons per year. The post-processed waste plastic is delivered to Geleen, where it is oiled using Plastic Energy's advanced recycling technology. SABIC refines this pyrolysis oil, called TACOIL^TM, in a newly built hydrotreater plant in order to then use it as an alternative raw material for the production of the certified polymers in the TRUECIRCLETM product portfolio.

KARACHI: Pakistan is losing out on the opportunity to pass on the benefits of discounted crude oil from Russia due to the old processing technology of its current refineries, industry officials said.

Pakistan imported discounted Russian crude oil last month; however the benefits of the cheap oil could not be passed to the end consumers as the old technology at Pakistan Refinery Limited (PRL) processed more furnace oil than diesel and petrol.

“Other refineries would do the same if they import the crude oil from Russia as all refineries have old technology,” people in the sector revealed.

Pakistan needed to approve the refining policy to upgrade the refining sector if it wanted to benefit from URAL, they said. [...]
