Pedestrian bridge health status

After 40 years of service, the council of a Swiss town wished to know the health status of a pedestrian bridge crossing a soft water channel.

The main structure of the bridge itself was not analysed, however smaller detachable components were sampled for investigation. These components are made of the same materials as the bridge’s structure and can serve as a proxy for evaluating the health status.

Cross sections of bolts, fixtures, railing brackets and struts were analysed to learn if corrosion had damaged the surface and to which extent. Fortunately in this case, no significant damage could be observed. The bridge is still in good condition, 40 years after inauguration.
