The polyethylene plant was opened in 1998 with a license from Union Carbide and a design capacity of 160,000 tonnes per year (two units with a capacity of 80,000 tonnes per year each).

First batch of polyethylene raw material was released in Nov 2019 after the closure of the first polyethylene plant for seven years.

In Jan 2025, Ras Lanuf Oil and Gas Processing Company has successfully resumed operations of the second production line at its polyethylene plant after more than 12 years of inactivity.
