Nemaska Lithium is a joint venture by the Government of Québec (through Investissement Québec) and Rio Tinto Canada. The new plant produces 33,000 tpy of battery-grade lithium hydroxide from spodumene. Calcination, milling and acid roasting are used, followed by a proprietary hydrometallurgical purification step in order to achieve a high purity.
