The global #propylene market is no longer a monolith.
As the attached data highlights, we are witnessing a fundamental divergence in how the world produces the "C3" building block. While the Rest of the World (ROW) remains linked to the traditional steam cracker—where propylene is merely a co/by-product of #ethylene — #China has built a massive, "on-purpose" engine designed for total market dominance.

1. The Feedstock Revolution: #Coal & #Propane Over #Naphtha
The infographic reveals the stark reality of China's sourcing strategy.
#PDH (Propane Dehydrogenation) (~35%): Aggressive capacity expansion that allows large scale propylene production.
#MTO / #CTO (Methanol/Coal-to-Olefins) (~15%): Leveraging domestic coal reserves to ensure energy security and provide a cost floor that is decoupled from global oil price volatility.
By prioritizing these pathways, China isn't just producing chemicals; it is insulating its industrial base from global supply chain shocks.

2. The Polypropylene Tipping Point
We are already seeing the first wave of impact. China has transitioned from a massive importer to a net seller of #Polypropylene (PP) while remaining a massive importer of #Polyethylene

3. The Downstream Tsunami: Beyond Plastics
The "excess" propylene isn't just staying in pellet form. It is flowing into high-value intermediates, threatening traditional producers in Europe, Japan, and the US.
- #Polyurethane with PO and #Polyols
- Appliances & Automotive with Acrylonitrile (ACN)
- Hygiene & Paints with Acrylic Acid (AA)
- #Epoxy & #Polycarbonate with #Phenol / #Acetone

China’s move toward Coal-to-Olefins and PDH is a strategic "moat."
Propane still rely on imports while coal offer full #sovereignty with massive local reserves. By controlling the propylene supply, they aren't just winning the commodity game—they are positioning themselves as the primary supplier for the global automotive, construction, and electronics industries.
