Vitol Holding B.V. is the ultimate parent company of the Vitol group, headquartered in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Founded in 1966 by Henk Viëtor and Jacques Detiger as a Dutch fuel oil trader, Vitol has grown into the world’s largest independent energy trading company, with trading volumes of approximately 7 million barrels per day of crude oil and refined products as of recent disclosures. The group operates from major trading hubs including Geneva, Houston, London, and Singapore, with offices in around 40 countries.

The group’s activities span crude oil and refined products trading, chartering (with a managed fleet of several hundred vessels at any given time), storage and terminal infrastructure, power trading, and downstream investments. Key holdings include the ~30% stake in ASX-listed Viva Energy Group Limited (Australia), acquired via the 2014 purchase of Shell’s Australian downstream business; the Vivo Energy distribution business across Africa; refining assets in Europe (including the Bayernoil refinery in Germany); and the 2024 acquisition of a majority stake in Italian refiner Saras, including the Sarroch refinery in Sardinia.

Vitol Holding B.V. is a private company owned by its employee partners — publicly reported as approximately 400–450 partners — through an internal shareholding structure. The company is led by CEO Russell Hardy. Vitol’s consolidated revenue has been reported in the range of US$400–500 billion in recent years, placing it among the largest private companies in the world by revenue.
