Description

History

Honeywell traces its roots back over 100 years, through the legacies of the original Honeywell (founded 1906 in Minneapolis as a thermostat company) and AlliedSignal (itself a merger of Allied Chemical and Signal Companies). AlliedSignal acquired the Honeywell name following its 1999 merger with Honeywell Inc., creating the current Honeywell International. Since then, the company has grown into one of the world's largest diversified industrial conglomerates.

Business Segments

As of 2026, Honeywell operates across four main business segments:

  • Aerospace Technologies — avionics, propulsion systems, flight controls, navigation, and cabin systems; found on ~90% of aircraft in the free world
  • Building Automation — HVAC, building management systems, fire and security solutions across ~10 million buildings
  • Industrial Automation / Process Automation & Technology (PA&T) — industrial control systems, sensors, safety equipment, and process technology (including UOP LLC)
  • Honeywell Forge — integrated IoT/AI software platform connecting assets, people, and processes for operational performance

Scale and Financials

  • Employees: ~100,000 worldwide
  • Revenue: ~$36 billion (2024)
  • R&D investment: Over 4% of sales self-funded, ~10% total including customer-funded R&D
  • Global presence: Manufacturing, R&D, sales, and service operations across North America, Europe, Asia, and beyond

Strategic Transformation (2025–2026)

Honeywell is undergoing a major corporate restructuring, separating into three independent publicly traded companies:

  • Honeywell Aerospace Technologies — spin-off targeted for Q3 2026
  • Honeywell Automation — retaining industrial and building automation
  • Advanced Materials — specialty chemicals and materials (previously announced spin-off)

This transformation is designed to sharpen focus on automation, the future of aviation, and energy transition as core strategic pillars. Honeywell has also committed to carbon neutrality by 2035 as part of its sustainability agenda.
