Martinez Refining Company LLC is the operating entity of the ~156,000 bpd Martinez refinery in the San Francisco Bay Area, acquired from Shell (Equilon Enterprises LLC) in February 2020 — a transaction completed weeks before the COVID-19 demand collapse. The refinery produces CARB-compliant fuels for Northern California but has experienced significant operational reliability issues, including a major fire in 2022 and subsequent extended downtime that weighed on PBF's results through 2023–2024. It is the named permittee on the refinery's environmental permits and regulatory filings.
