Historical Lineage

  • Origins:
Technip was founded in 1958 by the Institut français du pétrole (IFP) as Compagnie française d'études et de construction Technip.

  • Growth:
Through the decades, Technip expanded globally, acquiring companies with specialized technologies (e.g., KTI, Krebs, Speichim) and merging with Coflexip in the early 2000s, further strengthening its subsea and offshore capabilities.

  • Merger and Spin-off:
In 2017, Technip merged with FMC Technologies to form TechnipFMC.

  • In 2021, Technip Energies was spun off as an independent, publicly listed company focused on engineering, procurement, and project management for the energy and chemicals sectors.

Acquisition of Stone & Webster

  • Stone & Webster Background:
Stone & Webster, founded in 1889, was a prominent American engineering company known for its process technologies in refining and petrochemicals. After bankruptcy in 2000, it was acquired by The Shaw Group.

  • Technip’s Acquisition:
In August 2012, Technip completed the acquisition of Stone & Webster’s process technologies and associated oil & gas engineering capabilities from The Shaw Group for approximately €225 million. This acquisition included:
    • Proprietary refining and petrochemical process technologies (including FCC/RFCC, ethylene, and others).
    • Engineering and research centers in the US, UK, and India.
    • A skilled workforce specializing in downstream technologies.

  • Impact:
The acquisition created a new business unit, Technip Stone & Webster Process Technology, within Technip’s Onshore/Offshore segment, substantially enhancing Technip’s position as a technology provider to the refining and petrochemicals industries.
