Sodium Hydroxide, also known as Lye, Caustic Soda or Sodium Hydrate is an inorganic compound with the formula NaOH. It is a white solid ionic compound consisting of Sodium cations Na+ and Hydroxide anions OH−. It is an odorless, highly corrosive, strong base.

Caustic soda is used in a wide variety of industrial sectors like:
- Pulp and paper processing: caustic soda is used in the bleaching process, in de-inking of waste paper, and in water treatment.
- Textile industry: caustic soda is used to produce cotton and synthetic fibers
- Soap and detergent industry: caustic is broadly used to produce soaps and detergents
- Oil and gas industry: caustic soda is used to remove pungent smells.
