- Hydrotreated Atmospheric Residuum
- Description
-
Hydrotreated atmospheric residuum is a heavy petroleum fraction produced through high-pressure catalytic hydrotreating of atmospheric residue. The process achieves:
Key Features
- Up to 95% sulfur removal through hydrodesulfurization reactions
- Reduction of up to 65% in residual carbon content
- Partial removal of metals, nitrogen, and other contaminants
- Conversion of some heavy molecules to lighter products through mild hydrocracking
Process Details
The hydrotreating is conducted in fixed-bed reactors using:
- Catalysts containing combinations of Cobalt, Nickel, Molybdenum, or Tungsten supported on alumina
- Guard reactor beds to remove metals and protect main catalysts
- Severe operating conditions requiring high hydrogen partial pressures
- Multiple reactor stages for different treatment objectives
Applications
The hydrotreated product serves as:
- Feedstock for FCC/RFCC units
- Feed for hydrocracking or delayed coking units
- Component in low sulfur fuel oil production
