Description

The Newport Specialty Elastomers Plant (Newport, Wales) is a specialty thermoplastic elastomer manufacturing facility that produces Santoprene™ TPE—an advanced material that behaves like vulcanized rubber but can be reused and reengineered for automotive, industrial, and consumer applications. ExxonMobil completed a major expansion in 2019 that doubled the plant's manufacturing capacity through installation of two new production lines, increasing global Santoprene™ capacity by 25% and creating 35 new full-time jobs. The facility originally operated at approximately 50,000 tonnes per year before the expansion. In June 2021, ExxonMobil sold the Newport plant and its global Santoprene™ business to Celanese Corporation for $1.15 billion, with employees transferring to Celanese ownership in Q4 2021.
