Description

Laffan Refinery 2 is a condensate splitter refinery built adjacent to LR1 at Ras Laffan Industrial City, effectively doubling Qatar's condensate processing capacity at the site. It commenced commercial production in December 2016 and was formally inaugurated by Qatar's Amir in February 2017. Total project cost was US$1.5 billion. LR2 is operated by QatarEnergy LNG on behalf of Laffan Refinery Company Limited 2.

Feedstock

LR2 processes gas condensate from the North Field, supplied via the same integrated pipeline infrastructure as LR1 within RLIC. Together, LR1 and LR2 process up to ~300,000 b/d of condensate across the combined complex.

Process Units

LR2 is a non-integrated condensate splitter, producing Euro V specification products. Key process units include:

  • Atmospheric distillation unit (condensate splitter)
  • Naphtha hydrotreater
  • Kerosene hydrotreater
  • Hydrogen production unit
  • Saturation gas plant (LPG recovery)
  • Diesel Hydrotreater (DHT): shared with LR1; processes 54,000 b/d of straight-run gasoil from both LR1 and LR2 combined
  • Gas oil deep desulphurisation unit
  • Wastewater treatment and recycling plant (shared with LR1)

Capacity & Products

Product Capacity (b/d)
Full-range Naphtha ~60,000
Jet A-1 / Kerosene ~53,000
Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD) ~24,000
LPG (propane + butane) ~9,000
Total throughput ~146,000 b/d

LR2 produces products to Euro V specifications, a key upgrade over LR1's original product slate. Products are exported primarily to Southeast Asia and Europe, as well as supplied to the domestic Qatar market.
