Existing Infrastructure

The Sines Industrial Complex, operated by Repsol, is a major integrated petrochemical facility located on the Portuguese coast near Sines in the Alentejo region. Before the expansion, the complex primarily focused on the production of olefins and polyolefins, serving as a key site for Repsol’s industrial operations in Portugal. The existing infrastructure includes:

• Olefins and Polyolefins Production Units: Core facilities for producing basic chemicals used in a wide range of industries.
• Integrated Utilities and Logistics: The complex benefits from advanced utilities, internal logistics, and connections to the Port of Sines, supporting both raw material imports and product exports.
• Established Workforce and Operations: The site employs a significant number of direct and indirect workers, contributing to the local and national economy.
• Sustainability Initiatives: Even prior to the expansion, the complex was involved in initiatives to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions, in line with Repsol’s broader sustainability strategy.

New Plants (Alba Project Expansion)

The Alba project represents a significant expansion within the Sines Industrial Complex, but it does not constitute a separate site. Instead, it adds new, state-of-the-art production capabilities and supporting infrastructure, including:

• Two New Polymer Plants:
  • Linear Polyethylene (PEL) Plant: 300,000 tonnes/year capacity.
  • Polypropylene (PP) Plant: 300,000 tonnes/year capacity.
• Renewable Hydrogen Integration (H2ALBA Project): The expansion includes on-site production of renewable hydrogen via electrolysis, supporting decarbonization of polymer production.
• Photovoltaic Energy: Integration of self-consumption solar energy to further reduce the carbon footprint.
• New Logistics Facilities: Enhanced storage, shipment, and rail transport capabilities to boost connections with the European market.
