Description

Davide Forleo, 5th Nov 2013, eni refining & marketing Gela Refinery, eni.

The Gela Refinery is situated on the southern coast of Sicily, in Piana del Signore in the municipality of Gela and, together with the other companies operating on the site, extends over an area of 5 km² divided into “islands”. The first production plants became operational in 1962, with a production capacity of 3 million tonnes of crude oil per year (the current processing capacity amounts to around 5 million tonnes of crude oil per year).

Charlotte Anderson, 28th Nov 2028, The Gela Refinery in Sicily., Alpha Laval.

The Gela Refinery, with a balanced primary refining capacity of 100,000 barrels/day, represents an upstream integrated pole with the production of heavy crude oil obtained from nearby Eni fields offshore Sicily, while downstream it is integrated with Eni’s nearby petrochemical plants. The refinery produces fuels for automotive use and residential heating purposes as well as petrochemical feedstocks.

Besides its primary distillation plants, the Gela refinery contains an FCC reactor with advanced technology, two coking plants for the conversion of low grade feedstock’s and vacuum conversion of heavy residues. All these plants are integrated in order to process heavy residues and manufacture valuable products and produce electricity. The refinery also contains modern residue and exhaust fume treatment plants which allow the complex to comply with the most exacting environmental standards.

Crude oil and oil products are handled on land and by sea. The maritime facilities have a receiving capacity of about 900 ships per year equating to a total of 9 million tonnes of products. For the distribution of products by land, the refinery has 13 platforms to load tank trucks, with a capacity of about 3 500 tonnes/day.

  • Biofuels from waste raw materials:
The biorefinery in Gela produces quality biofuel (HVO - Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) from raw materials of organic origin. The plant can use second generation (unconventional) feedstocks for up to 100% of its processing capacity and has a high level of operational flexibility. The process is based on our proprietary EcofiningTM technology. The biorefinery is mainly (about 85%) fuelled by waste raw materials, such as waste cooking oil, animal fats and residues from the agro-food industry for the production of biofuels, HVO diesel, bio-LPG, bio-jet and bio-naphtha for the chemical chain. At Gela we also produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), whose bio-components are processed and distilled to create Eni Biojet, a fuel that can be blended with conventional products.

  • The development of renewable energy:
In Gela we are conducting a number of activities in renewable energy. Through Eni Rewind, we have built a 5 MW photovoltaic plant on the former phosphogypsum landfill site, which has already been made permanently safe. An additional plant with a capacity of about 1 MW was built by Eni New Energy in an area owned by Eni Rewind. In collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston and the Polytechnic University of Milan, we also installed the first Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plant in the New Oil Centre in Gela.

  • Highlights:
The data were selected from those contained in our official documents.

    • 470 kton of biomass processed in the Gela biorefinery in 2023

    • 400,000 ton/y capacity SAF producton
