The Rijeka refinery, located in the Urinj area at the entrance to Bay of Bakar, has a nominal processing capacity of approximately 4.5 million tonnes per year, though historically processed slightly over 2.0 million tonnes annually. Founded in 1883 in the Mlaka district, it was originally the largest refinery on the European continent with an initial capacity of 60,000 tonnes per annum. The facility is strategically positioned with access to deep-water port facilities and the JANAF pipeline system, covering an area of 3.5 square kilometers.
The refinery operates with relatively deep conversion capabilities, producing Euro V quality gasoline and diesel, bio-component fuels, Arctic diesel, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG and autogas), jet fuel, heating oil, lubricants, asphalt, coke, sulfur, and paraffin wax. Primary processing units include atmospheric distillation, catalytic reforming, fluid catalytic cracking (FCC), and hydrocracking facilities commissioned in May 2011.
