Description

Configuration of the Pengerang Refinery Complex (Pengerang RC)

The Pengerang Refinery Complex (Pengerang RC), part of the Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC) and operated by Pengerang Refining Company Sdn Bhd, is a full-conversion refinery designed for high reliability and flexibility. Below is an overview of its configuration and key process units:

Key Features and Units:

  • Crude Processing Capacity:
Up to 300,000 barrels per day (bpd) of various crude oils, making it one of the largest refineries in Southeast Asia.[1][2][3]
  • Multiple Train Configuration:
Critical process units utilize a multiple train design to maximize reliability and ensure uninterrupted production.[1]
  • Major Process Units:
    • Crude Distillation Unit CDU
    • Atmospheric Residue Desulphurisation Unit ARDS
    • Residue Fluid Catalytic Cracking RFCC Unit (two trains, Axens technology, 140,000 bpd combined capacity)
    • Kerosene Hydrotreater KHT
    • Diesel Hydrotreater DHT
    • Naphtha Hydrotreater NHT
    • Cracked Naphtha Hydrotreater CNHT
    • Continuous Catalytic Reformer CCR
    • Liquefied Petroleum Gas Treating Unit LTU
    • Amine Regeneration Unit ARU
    • Sour Water Stripping Unit SWS
    • Hydrogen Production Unit HPU
    • Refinery Pressure Swing Adsorption RPSA
    • Saturated Gas Plant SGP[1][4]
  • Product Slate:
The refinery produces Euro 5 gasoline and diesel, jet fuel, and other refined products, as well as feedstock for the adjacent petrochemical complex.[2][3]
  • Supporting Infrastructure:
    • Extensive storage tank farms for crude, products, and olefins.[4]
    • Integration with a steam cracker and downstream petrochemical plants.
    • Access to shared utilities, including a cogeneration plant and deepwater terminal.[3][5]

Unique Technologies:

  • The RFCC unit is the largest in the world using Axens technology and is the first of its kind in Malaysia.[1]
  • The naphtha hydro-treating unit also uses Axens technology, a first in the country.[1]
  • The KHT unit is uniquely designed to produce both jet fuel and domestic-use kerosene.[1]

Integration:

  • The refinery is fully integrated with a steam cracker and petrochemical complex, enabling efficient production of both fuels and petrochemical feedstocks.[1][2][3]
