Description

The Joliet Refinery is located 40 miles southwest of Chicago, Ill.
Built in 1972, the Joliet facility is one of the newest refineries in the United States and is ideally located to receive and process Canadian crude oil delivered by pipeline.
The characteristics of Canadian crude require specialized refinery equipment and processes and the Joliet Refinery was designed with this purpose in mind.
Today the refinery is equipped to handle 250,000 barrels of crude per day, producing about 9 million gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel every day.
That daily production is enough to drive an average car around the world more than 7,000 times.
These fuels and other refinery products are transported from the refinery to consumers primarily across the Midwest.
The refinery uses state-of-the-art technology to process crude safely, reliably and efficiently.

From the 2024 fact sheet:

Operations/Production

  • 270,000 barrels per day capacity
  • 11 million gallons of gasoline/diesel produced per day, which is equivalent to approximately 550,000 car & semi-truck “fill-ups” per day
  • Other products include liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), asphalt, sulfur and petroleum coke
  • • The facility has 12 major processing units in addition to the following:
    • Wastewater Treatment Facility
    • Tankage and LPG Storage
    • Cogeneration Facility
    • Rail Car Access and Barge Loading Dock
    • etc...

Products and their end uses:

  • Distillates: Diesel, Gasoline
  • Gas: Fuel Gas, Liquified Petroleum Gas
  • Naphtha: Gasoline
  • Residuum: Coke, Asphalt

Distribution

  • Gasoline and diesel are transported by pipeline to Ill., Ind., Iowa, Mich., Ohio, Pa., and Wis.
  • Asphalt and pet coke are transported by truck, barge and rail to Ill., Ind., and Mo.
