The QatarEnergy Refinery is Qatar's primary crude oil and condensate refinery, located in Mesaieed Industrial City (MIC), approximately 45 km south of Doha. It is the oldest refining facility in Qatar, first established in 1954 under the name "Umm Said Refinery" (Mesaieed was formerly known as Umm Said).
Ownership & Operation
The refinery is 100% owned and operated by QatarEnergy, Qatar's state-owned energy company. It is not a joint venture — unlike several of QatarEnergy's other downstream facilities — and operates directly under QatarEnergy's Refining division.
Capacity & Feedstock
The refinery has been expanded through several phases over its history and now has the capacity to process more than 100,000 barrels of feed per day. It processes both crude oil (primarily from the Dukhan field) and condensate from Qatar's North Field gas operations. A major upgrade and expansion program targeting ~137,000 b/d throughput and Euro 5-grade products was underway through 2022–2026.
Products
The refinery produces a full range of refined products for both domestic supply and export:
- LPG
- Naphtha
- Gasoline / motor spirit
- Jet A-1 / kerosene
- Gasoil / diesel (including ULSD since 2020)
- Fuel oil
- Bitumen (via the Biturox AABU plant)
- Sulphur
SEEF Chemical Plant Integration
In 2020, the SEEF Chemical Plant was formally integrated into the QatarEnergy Refinery complex. SEEF operates units producing:
- Linear Alkylbenzene (LAB): 100,000 t/y
- Normal Paraffin: 80,000 t/y
- Benzene: 36,000 t/y
This integration broadened the refinery into a combined refining and chemicals complex.
Recent Events
On 2 March 2026, following Iranian drone strikes on both Ras Laffan and Mesaieed Industrial City, QatarEnergy halted all production operations at both sites, including crude oil refining and downstream chemical activities at Mesaieed.
