The use of microorganisms or biological agents — typically bacteria or archaea — to catalyse the dissolution, oxidation or transformation of metal-bearing minerals, enabling metal extraction under ambient conditions (e.g., bioleaching of copper sulphides, biooxidation of refractory gold ores).
