Petroleum needle coke is a premium-grade, highly crystalline form of petroleum-derived coke produced in a delayed coker from highly aromatic, low-impurity petroleum heavy residues. Its name derives from its distinctive needle-like or fibrous microstructure, visible under polarised light microscopy, which reflects the highly oriented, graphene-like carbon layers formed during coking. This long-range microstructural order results in exceptionally low levels of impurities and a characteristically low Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE) — the defining quality parameter of needle coke.
