Chimie ParaChem is a limited partnership established in Montreal-East, Quebec, operating as Canada's sole manufacturer of paraxylene (PX), an aromatic hydrocarbon integral to polyester production used in textiles and plastic containers.

The facility, located on the former Gulf Refinery site and established in 1994, operates under joint ownership by Investissement Québec (49%) and Suncor Energy Inc. (51%).

The plant processes mixed xylenes and toluene feedstock from Suncor's adjacent Montreal-East refinery using Mobil's Sensitive Toluene Disproportionation Process (MSTDP) coupled with crystallization and isomerization technologies to produce approximately 350,000 metric tonnes annually of para-xylene, supplemented by benzene and hydrogen as co-products, supplying roughly 8% of North American demand and approximately 1% of global paraxylene consumption.

As a critical link in Eastern Montreal's integrated polyester production chain, Chimie ParaChem has historically supplied feedstock to downstream PTA and polyester manufacturing facilities, with operations continuing despite market fluctuations and workforce reductions following the 2024 closure of downstream consumer Indorama's PTA plant.
