Sasol Synfuels (Pty) Ltd is the operating company responsible for Sasol's world-class coal-to-liquids (CTL) synthetic fuels production complex located in Secunda, South Africa. It operates the two largest Fischer-Tropsch synthesis plants globally and serves as the cornerstone of Sasol's Energy business and the primary cash-generative asset of the group.

Legal and Registration Details

  • Status: Wholly-owned subsidiary of Sasol South Africa Limited
  • Parent Company: Sasol South Africa Limited (81.6% owned by Sasol Limited; 18.4% B-BBEE participation through Sasol Khanyisa)
  • Established: 1993 (through merger of Sasol II and Sasol III operations)
  • Historical Background:
    • Sasol II commenced operations in March 1980
    • Sasol III commenced operations in May 1982
    • Both facilities consolidated operationally in 1993 to form Sasol Synfuels (Pty) Ltd

Strategic Significance

Sasol Synfuels is a critical strategic asset for South African energy security by: 

  • providing approximately 31-33 million barrels of liquid fuel annually
  • supplying approximately 40% of South Africa's domestic liquid fuel demand
  • Producing 30-35% of South Africa's jet fuel requirements, and is energy security
