Incorporated in 1968, Sasol South Africa Limited (SSA) is the largest and most cash-generative operating subsidiary of Sasol Limited, housing the company's integrated South African synthetic fuels, chemicals, and gas operations. Sasol South Africa Limited comprises all Southern African Operations and houses five primary Operating Hubs:
1. Secunda Synfuels Operations
- World's largest coal-to-liquids (CTL) facility
- Produces synthetic fuel components (petrol, diesel, jet fuel) via Fischer-Tropsch technology
- Coal gasification and natural gas reforming feedstock
- Capacity: ~160,000 barrels per day
2. Secunda Chemicals Operations
- Consolidation of all chemical manufacturing facilities at Secunda
- Base chemicals, polymers, ammonia, and specialty products
- Integrated with synfuels operations
3. Sasolburg Operations
- Total area: 51.4 km²
- Three manufacturing sites: Sasol One Site, Midland Site, and Bunsen Site
- Products: Ammonia, ammonium nitrate, caustic soda, chlorine, acrylic acids, polyethylene (LDPE, LLDPE), PVC, cyanide, nitric acid, solvents, waxes
- Two power generation facilities including 175 MW natural gas-fired plant (commissioned 2012)
4. Natref Joint Venture (Sasolburg)
- Crude oil refinery co-owned with Prax Group
- Ownership: Sasol Oil (Pty) Ltd holds 63.64% equity
- Capacity: 108,500 barrels per day
- Products: Refined petroleum and petrochemical products for inland South African market
5. Satellite Operations
- Consolidation of all operating activities outside Secunda and Sasolburg
- Includes logistics, gas pipeline operations, wax blending plant (Durban), and explosives operations
Coal Mining Operations
Sasol Mining (Pty) Ltd operates six coal mines supporting the Southern African Operations:
- Secunda-area mines: Bosjesspruit, Brandspruit, Middelbult, Syferfontein, Twistdraai
- Sasolburg-area: Sigma complex
- Supply: ~40 million tons annually
Gas Operations
Sasol Gas (subsidiary division):
- Purchases natural gas from Mozambique via ROMPCO pipeline (865 km)
- Supplies syngas and natural gas to Secunda and Sasolburg operations
- Sells excess gas to external market
