Description

Wood is a structural tissue found as xylem in the stems and roots of trees and other woody plants, composed of cellulosic fibers embedded in a matrix of lignin and hemicelluloses.

It consists of cells with walls made primarily of cellulose (40–50%), hemicellulose (15–25%), and lignin (15–30%), forming a natural composite material that is strong, relatively lightweight, and characterized by its distinctive grain structure.

Wood serves as the principal strengthening and water-conducting tissue in woody plants, providing mechanical support while transporting water and nutrients from roots to leaves.

As a material, wood has been used for thousands of years for fuel, construction, tools, weapons, furniture, packaging, artworks, and paper.

Its properties vary significantly between species, with distinctions between hardwoods (from angiosperms) and softwoods (from gymnosperms), each offering different characteristics in terms of density, strength, workability, and appearance.
