Description

Jet A-1 is the international standard commercial aviation turbine fuel, used at virtually all airports outside the United States and specified under both ASTM D1655 and the UK defence standard DEF STAN 91-091 (NATO code F-35, also marketed as AVTUR).

  • Jet A has a flash point higher than 38 °C (100 °F), with an auto-ignition temperature of 210 °C (410 °F).
  • Its defining characteristic relative to Jet A is a tighter freeze point of ≤ −47 °C, providing the additional cold-temperature margin required for long-haul, high-latitude, and polar operations.
  • The other difference is the mandatory addition of an anti-static additive to Jet A-1.

Jet A-1 is the grade referenced in all major international fuel supply contracts, tanker cargo nominations, and price indices published by IATA, Platts, and Argus. The military equivalent — JP-8 (NATO F-34) — is essentially Jet A-1 with a mandatory corrosion inhibitor, lubricity improver, and antistatic additive package required for military aircraft fuel systems.
