The Lotte Chemical Titan Malaysia (LCTM) Pasir Gudang Complex is one of Malaysia's largest integrated petrochemical facilities, located in Pasir Gudang, Johor, Malaysia, adjacent to the Port of Johor. It is owned and operated by Lotte Chemical Titan Malaysia Sdn Bhd (100%), a subsidiary of Lotte Chemical Titan Holding Berhad (LCTH), itself a listed company on Bursa Malaysia.

Site Overview

  • The Pasir Gudang site, together with the nearby Tanjung Langsat site (also in Johor), forms part of an integrated complex of 12 plants, two co-generation plants, and three tank farms, connected by underground pipelines and shared utilities operating as a single integrated complex.

  • Total production capacity across both Malaysian sites (Pasir Gudang and Tanjung Langsat) exceeds 2.4 million tonnes per year of olefins, polyolefins and associated products.

  • The complex is naphtha-fed, with Saudi Aramco as a key strategic naphtha supplier under a three-year supply agreement.

Production Units and Technologies

The following confirmed production units and technology licensors are in operation at Pasir Gudang:

Plant Nameplate Capacity (KTA) Actual Capacity (KTA) Technology/Licensor
Naphtha Cracker 1 (NC1) 345 430 Stone & Webster (now Technip Energies)
Naphtha Cracker 2 (NC2) 495 869 Stone & Webster (now Technip Energies)
Polypropylene Plant 1 (PP1) 100 180 Basell Polyolefins (now LyondellBasell Spheripol®)
Polypropylene Plant 2 (PP2) 200 300 Basell Polyolefins (now LyondellBasell Spheripol®)
Polypropylene Plant 3 (PP3) 200 200 unknown
LLDPE/HDPE Swing Plant 200 220 Union Carbide (now Univation UNIPOL PE®)
Aromatics Plant 170 200 Krupp Uhde (now thyssenkrupp Uhde)
Butadiene Plant 100 100 BASF
Metathesis Plant 115 115 ABB Lummus (now Lummus Technologies)

Key Observations

  • The combined ethylene capacity of the two remaining crackers (NC1 shut down December 2024, NC2 active) is stated as exceeding 950,000 tpy when both are operational.

  • NC1 (430 KTA) was permanently shut down in December 2024 due to sustained cash losses, reducing active cracking capacity to NC2 alone (869 KTA).

Strategic Role

  • The Pasir Gudang complex is the upstream olefin supply hub for the broader LCTH group, feeding both Malaysian downstream polymer units and — via naphtha surplus transfers — emergency supply to PT Lotte Chemical Indonesia (LCI) in Cilegon during the current Hormuz crisis.

  • It is also the source of intra-group ethylene transfers that historically supplemented the LCTN Merak PE plant in Indonesia prior to the LCI cracker startup.
