Description

Laffan Refinery 1 is Qatar's first condensate splitter refinery, located within Ras Laffan Industrial City (RLIC), ~80 km north of Doha. It commenced commercial production in September 2009 and was designed to be one of the largest condensate refineries in the world at the time of its commissioning. It is operated by QatarEnergy LNG (formerly Qatargas Operating Company) on behalf of Laffan Refinery Company Limited.

Feedstock

LR1 processes ~146,000 barrels per day (b/d) of untreated gas condensate sourced from the LNG and gas processing facilities of Qatargas, RasGas (now consolidated under QatarEnergy LNG), and Al-Khaleej Gas — all located within RLIC and directly connected by pipeline. The condensate originates from Qatar's North Field, the world's largest single natural gas field.

Process Units

LR1 is a non-integrated condensate splitter with a Nelson Complexity Index (NCI) of 4.99. Key process units include:

  • Atmospheric distillation unit (condensate splitter)
  • Naphtha hydrotreater
  • Kerosene hydrotreater
  • Saturation gas plant (LPG recovery)
