Woodside Energy Group Ltd is an ASX-listed Australian energy company and one of the world’s largest independent producers of liquefied natural gas (LNG), headquartered in Perth, Western Australia. Founded in 1954 as Woodside (Lakes Entrance) Oil Co N.L., the company grew through the development of the North West Shelf Project — one of Australia’s largest resources ventures — which began LNG production in 1989 from the Karratha Gas Plant. The company adopted its current name in 2022 following its merger with BHP’s petroleum business, a transaction that approximately doubled Woodside’s production and made it a top-10 global independent energy company by production.
Woodside’s operations span LNG, domestic gas, oil, and condensate production, predominantly offshore Western Australia. Major assets include the North West Shelf Project (Karratha Gas Plant), the Pluto LNG facility near Karratha (with the Pluto Train 2 expansion under construction, fed by the Scarborough gas field), and the Macedon and Wheatstone-linked domestic gas supply operations. The BHP petroleum merger added the Bass Strait oil and gas assets (Gippsland Basin joint venture with ExxonMobil), North West Shelf oil interests, and international assets including the Shenzi and Atlantis fields in the US Gulf of Mexico and the Sangomar oil field offshore Senegal, which achieved first oil in 2024.
The company is also developing new energy businesses, including hydrogen and ammonia projects in Australia and the United States (notably the H2OK liquid hydrogen project in Oklahoma) and carbon capture and storage opportunities, as part of its stated strategy to invest in lower-carbon energy alongside its core LNG portfolio.
