Description

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a synthetic organic compound with the chemical formula (CH₃)₂C(C₆H₄OH)₂, belonging to the diphenylmethane group and characterized by two hydroxyphenyl groups attached to a central carbon atom[1][2]. It is a colorless crystalline solid, soluble in most common organic solvents but only sparingly soluble in water[1][3][4]. BPA is primarily produced on an industrial scale by the acid-catalyzed condensation of phenol and acetone[3].

BPA’s main industrial use is as a building block (monomer) in the manufacture of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins, accounting for approximately 65–70% and 25–30% of global BPA production, respectively[3][5][6]. Polycarbonate plastics made with BPA are valued for their strength, transparency, and heat resistance, making them common in food and beverage containers, safety equipment, medical devices, and optical lenses[3][5][7]. Epoxy resins derived from BPA are widely used as protective coatings for food and beverage cans, adhesives, paints, and as linings for various containers[3][5][6].

Global production of BPA exceeded 10 million tonnes in 2022, reflecting its continued importance in the plastics and resins industries, despite ongoing health and environmental discussion[3][4][5].
