Description

Aluminium trifluoride is an inorganic compound of aluminium and fluorine, serving as a critical additive in primary aluminium smelting and a key chemical intermediate across several industrial sectors. It appears as a white, free-flowing crystalline powder that is chemically stable, non-flammable, and non-hazardous under normal handling conditions.

Production Routes

Aluminium fluoride is produced industrially by two main routes:

  • Dry process (fluorspar route) — alumina (Al₂O₃) is reacted with hydrogen fluoride (HF) gas at ~700°C; produces high-purity anhydrous AlF₃ directly
  • Wet process — fluosilicic acid (H₂SiF₆), a by-product of phosphoric acid / fertiliser production, is reacted with aluminium hydroxide to yield AlF₃ trihydrate, which is then calcined to anhydrous AlF₃

Role in Aluminium Smelting

The primary and dominant use of AlF₃ is as a bath additive in the Hall–Héroult electrolytic smelting process. Its key functions within the cryolite-based electrolyte bath are:

  • Lowering the melting point — pure alumina melts at ~2,054°C; the cryolite-AlF₃ bath operates at approximately 960°C, making electrolysis industrially feasible
  • Enhancing bath conductivity — improving ionic mobility and current efficiency
  • Optimising the bath ratio — the cryolite ratio (NaF/AlF₃) is maintained at 2.2–2.8 by continuous AlF₃ addition to compensate for losses through evaporation and electrolysis
  • Reducing aluminium volatilisation — forming stable complexes that retain aluminium in the molten bath and improve yield
  • Protecting cell linings — reducing corrosive attack on cathode materials, extending cell life

Approximately 10–15 kg of AlF₃ is consumed per tonne of primary aluminium produced.

Other Industrial Applications

Beyond aluminium smelting, AlF₃ serves several secondary uses:

  • Ceramics — improves thermal stability, hardness, and surface finish of ceramic products
  • Glass & optical fibre — used in fluoroaluminate glass for fibre-optic imaging and medical optics, improving clarity and thermal shock resistance
  • Foundry fluxes — flux tablets for purifying molten metal in foundry operations
  • Chemical synthesis — catalyst and reagent in the production of fluorinated organic compounds
  • Fermentation inhibitor — used in fermentation processes to inhibit yeast activity

Market & Supply Chain

Demand for AlF₃ is directly correlated to global primary aluminium production. The main producers are located in China, Europe (notably Fluorsid in Sardinia, Italy), South Africa, and Russia. The trihydrate route, relying on fluosilicic acid as a feedstock, is increasingly favoured as it utilises a by-product waste stream from the phosphate fertiliser industry, reducing raw material costs.
