Description

Stabiliser overhead gas is the light hydrocarbon vapour stream leaving the top of a condensate stabiliser column during condensate stabilisation operations in upstream and midstream gas processing facilities. It is generated when dissolved light-end hydrocarbons are stripped from raw liquid condensate by distillation or multi-stage flash, and represents the volatile fraction of the raw condensate that cannot be retained in the stabilised liquid product at atmospheric storage conditions.

Typical Composition

Its composition is relatively rich in C₃–C₄ hydrocarbons compared to other plant gas streams, reflecting the distillation cut point set by the stabiliser operating conditions.

Component Range (mol%)
Methane (C₁) 40–70
Ethane (C₂) 10–20
Propane (C₃) 8–20
i/n-Butane (C₄) 5–15
C₅⁺ 1–5
N₂ / CO₂ Variable

Properties

Field Value
Molecular Weight Not applicable — variable; indicative average ~25–35 g/mol
Sulfur Content Typically <50 ppm wt% (sweet gas); variable if sour feed
Specific Gravity ~0.7–0.9 relative to air (gas phase)
Calorific value (gross) typically ~45–55 MJ/Nm³

Typical Dispositions

Where the propane and butane content is sufficiently high, the stream may be upgraded to a commercial LPG product by condensation and fractionation rather than being consumed as fuel.

  • Routed to plant fuel gas system after pressure regulation and conditioning
  • Recompressed into sales gas export stream
  • Fed to LPG recovery / NGL fractionation where C₃–C₄ content justifies extraction
  • Used as refrigerant makeup in NGL recovery units
