Viva Energy Group Limited is an ASX-listed Australian energy company and one of the nation’s two remaining crude oil refiners, headquartered in Melbourne. The company was established in 2014 when Vitol, the global energy trading group, acquired Shell’s Australian downstream business, and was listed on the Australian Securities Exchange in 2018.

Viva Energy owns and operates the Geelong Refinery in Victoria — one of only two operating refineries in Australia, with a crude processing capacity of approximately 120,000 barrels per day. Commissioned in 1954, the refinery produces petrol, diesel, jet fuel, bitumen, LPG, and marine fuels, supplying a substantial share of Victoria’s and South Australia’s fuel demand. Geelong operates under the Australian Government’s Fuel Security Services Payment program, which supports both remaining refineries through to mid-2027.

Downstream, Viva Energy is the exclusive licensee of Shell retail fuel branding in Australia, operating a national network of approximately 700 Shell-branded service stations, and is a major supplier of commercial fuels, lubricants (through Liberty Oil Australia), aviation fuels, and specialty products. The company is Australia’s largest bitumen supplier and operates fuel import and distribution terminals nationwide, including the former Shell refineries at Clyde (NSW) and Altona (VIC), now converted to import terminals.

Viva Energy is diversifying into alternative energy, with projects in biofuels (including biofuel blending at Geelong), hydrogen, and carbon capture, and has announced plans to develop LNG import capability at Geelong to address projected gas supply shortfalls in southeastern Australia.
