Description

Current Status

Merichem Company no longer operates as an independent business. Both of its former business lines have been divested to separate acquirers, and the corporate entity has effectively been wound down / absorbed:

  • January 3, 2024 — Merichem's process-technology and catalyst business (Merichem Process Technologies + Merichem Catalyst Products) was acquired by private equity firm Black Bay Energy Capital and re-launched as the independent Merichem Technologies, LLC. Merichem Company retained only its caustic-services business at that point.[1]
  • January 6, 2026 — Merichem Company's remaining business, Caustic Services (beneficial reuse / spent-caustic treatment), was divested to VLS Environmental Solutions and renamed VLS SustainChem, now operating within VLS's Hazardous Waste Services division.[2]

With no remaining operating business, "Merichem Company" persists today only as a legacy brand: the corporate website (merichem.com) remains live solely as an informational page describing the VLS sale, and the company's own LinkedIn page has already been renamed "Merichem Caustic Services", consistent with its absorption into VLS SustainChem.[3]

Historical Overview (pre-divestiture)

Merichem Company was a privately held, Houston, Texas-based process technology and specialty chemicals provider serving the oil & gas, refining, chemical/petrochemical and renewables industries. Founded in 1945, the company built its franchise on the beneficial reuse and treatment of spent caustic streams from refinery and petrochemical operations, and separately developed proprietary sulfur- and mercaptan-removal technologies — LO-CAT® (liquid redox H₂S removal), FIBER FILM® (fiber-film contactor mass transfer), THIOLEX® (mercaptan/RSH extraction), MERICAT® (fixed-bed catalysts), and MERICON® (spent caustic conversion) — later spun off with the Merichem Technologies sale.[2][1]
