Description

The Ras Laffan Petrochemicals Project (RLPP) is a world-scale integrated olefins and polyethylene complex under construction at Ras Laffan Industrial City (RLIC), Qatar, representing QatarEnergy's largest-ever single investment in Qatar's petrochemicals sector.

Location

The complex occupies a 435-acre site within Ras Laffan Industrial City, located approximately 80 km north of Doha, directly adjacent to Qatar's North Field gas reserves — ensuring reliable, cost-competitive ethane feedstock supply.

Process Configuration

The complex is structured around two integrated process packages:

  • Package 1 – Ethane Cracker: Capacity of 2,080 KTA (2.08 MTPA) of ethylene; the largest ethane cracker in the Middle East and one of the largest in the world; key units include pyrolysis furnaces, C2 hydrogenation, hydrogen purification, and three main compressors

  • Package 2 – Polyethylene Units: Two high-density polyethylene (HDPE) trains with combined capacity of 1,680 KTA (1.68 MTPA); one train at 1,000 KTA and a second at 680 KTA; ethylene from Package 1 feeds directly as feedstock into Package 2

Feedstock & Technology

The complex uses ethane as its primary feedstock, sourced directly from Qatar's gas processing infrastructure at RLIC. It employs state-of-the-art, energy-saving technology designed to achieve lower greenhouse gas emissions and lower waste than comparable global facilities.
