Hengli Petrochemical (Dalian) Refining Co., Ltd. operates the core refining and upstream petrochemical assets of the integrated Hengli complex on Changxing Island, Dalian, excluding the PTA and downstream new‑materials units that are run by the other Hengli Dalian operators.

Refining configuration and plants

The refining complex is designed as a 20 million t/y crude‑to‑chemicals refinery with deep residue conversion and integrated aromatics production, feeding downstream PTA and petrochemical units elsewhere in the park. The configuration includes:

• Crude distillation and vacuum distillation units sized for approximately 20 Mt/y of crude, configured to maximize straight‑run naphtha and middle distillate yield for further upgrading.

• A high‑conversion residue upgrading block based on Axens’ H‑Oil suite, including ebullated‑bed H‑Oil residue hydrocracking, Solvahl solvent deasphalting (SDA) and HyK hydrocracking of VGO and DAO, designed to achieve more than 92 wt% conversion of vacuum residue with no routine fuel‑oil production.

• Naphtha reforming and aromatics units that transform straight‑run and cracked naphtha into reformate and C₈ aromatics, providing paraxylene, xylenes and benzene as feedstock to the site’s PTA and petrochemical value chains.

• Supporting hydrotreating and hydrocracking units for straight‑run and cracked gasoils, enabling production of on‑spec gasoline, diesel and jet fuel that are marketed as transportation fuels via the Hengli Petrochemical group.

Taken together, these technologies allow Hengli Petrochemical (Dalian) Refining Co., Ltd. to operate a deep‑conversion refining platform with high yields of gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, LPG, lube base oils, paraxylene, benzene and other aromatics.

The Hengli project in China is an exemple of the option that integrates upgrading heavy oil at the refinery with a petrochemical plant downstream. The configuration includes the high-conversion H-Oil suite of technologie; the H-Oil process, SDA (Solvahl), and hydrocracking (HyK) of vacuum gas oil (VGO) and DAO for the maximum yield of naphtha for processing in a downstream petrochemical plant. This 110000 b/d plant uses two parallel trains with two ebullated bed reactors in series for each train. The design feedstock is a blend of Arabian and Marlin crudes. Pitch from the SDA unit is routed to a gasification unit. Axens provided the major  technologies for both the refining and petrochemical plants. This unit is scheduled to start-up in the first semester of 2019.
