Description

Located in the Kwinana industrial area south of Perth, Western Australia, the Kwinana Refinery operated from 1955 until March 2021. With a crude processing capacity of approximately 146,000 barrels per day, it was Australia’s largest refinery and the only one in Western Australia, supplying the majority of the state’s gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and bitumen. BP ceased refining operations in March 2021, citing competition from large-scale Asian refineries and sustained low refining margins, and converted the site to a fuel import terminal. BP was redeveloping Kwinana as an integrated energy hub, with planned investments in renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production via HEFA processing and green hydrogen projects, but the project has apparently been pause in 2024 pending confirmation of cancellation.
