- A colourless Liquid manufactured using Methanol and Isobutylene, Methyl tert-Butyl Ether (MTBE) has been used as an anti-knocking agent for Gasoline engines since the 1970s. Ethyl tert-Butyl Ether (ETBE) is also an oxygenate and Gasoline Additive but is made from Ethanol and Isobutene. The price of Ethanol is higher than methanol, making ETBE more expensive.
