TPPI’s integrated refinery–petrochemical complex at Jenu, Tuban, East Java, is centered on processing condensate and naphtha into fuels and aromatics. The plant originally came onstream in the mid‑2000s (commercial operations from 2006), and since then it has seen repeated stop–start operation and a major revamp program under Pertamina’s refinery arm, Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI).

Processes & Technologies

• Condensate Splitting:
  Splits condensate into naphtha, kerosene, diesel, and other fractions with a processing capacity of 100,000 barrels of feedstock per day.

• Aromatics Complex:
  Utilizes advanced catalytic reforming and extraction technologies to convert naphtha into high-value aromatic products.

• Product Flexibility:
  The plant is designed for dual-mode operation: it can switch between producing gasoline and aromatics (notably paraxylene) depending on market demand and government directives.

• Aromatics Expansion Project: 
  The site’s original design included 500,000 tonnes/year (t/yr) of paraxylene and 400,000 tons/year of benzene, toluene, and orthoxylene, but recent expansions have increased these capacities. A recent $180 million expansion project was initiated to increase output capacity from 600,000 to 780,000 t/yr (+30%) for paraxylene and further boosting other aromatics and fuel products such as expanding benzene production capacity from 360,000 t/yr to 490,000 t/yr. The project also expanded an upstream platforming unit, raising reforming capacity by 5,000-10,000 b/d to 55,000 b/d.  following the expansion. The project was completed in Jan 2024.

Feedstock

Primary Feedstocks are Condensate and Naphtha, processed in the refinery’s condensate splitter and naphtha processing units. Following completion of the aromatics expansion project, TPPI needs to buy heavy naphtha or additional condensate to operate the facility at full capacity.

Production Capacities 

Polypropylene Plant Project

The TPPI polypropylene (PP) plant has been licensed to use W. R. Grace & Co.’s UNIPOL^® PP technology, and as of mid‑2026, the project is still in the FID/early implementation window; there is no operating PP plant at TPPI yet.
