Description

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) is India's largest private sector company and a Fortune 500 conglomerate headquartered in Mumbai, with operations spanning petroleum refining, petrochemicals, retail, digital services, media, and financial services. Founded in 1958 by Dhirubhai Ambani as Reliance Commercial Corporation — initially trading commodities and polyester yarn — it has grown into a multi-sector global enterprise under Chairman & Managing Director Mukesh D. Ambani.

Business Segments

RIL operates through four core reportable segments:

  • Oil to Chemicals (O2C): Covers refining, petrochemicals, fuel retailing, aviation fuel, and wholesale marketing; produces polymers, polyesters, and elastomers

  • Oil & Gas: Exploration, development, and production of crude oil and natural gas, including deepwater blocks in the KG Basin

  • Retail: Reliance Retail — India's largest organized retail player, operating neighborhood stores, hypermarkets, specialty outlets, and e-commerce, with a workforce of ~290,293

  • Digital Services: Jio Platforms, providing telecom, broadband, digital TV, gaming, and enterprise connectivity across India

Refining & Petrochemicals Infrastructure

The centerpiece of RIL's industrial footprint is the Jamnagar Refinery Complex in Gujarat — the world's largest single-site refinery, with a combined crude processing capacity of 1.4 million barrels per day (mmbpd). The complex integrates two refineries:

  • Refinery I (domestic market): 660,000 bpd capacity

  • Refinery II (SEZ, export-oriented): 580,000 bpd capacity

The Jamnagar complex is fully integrated with a world-scale petrochemical complex producing ~21 million tonnes per year of chemicals including polyethylene, polypropylene, PVC, PTA, paraxylene, benzene, and multiple elastomers. The complex operates a full conversion refinery configuration, including FCC, delayed coker, hydrocracker, Catalytic Reformer, and alkylation units.

Financial Performance

RIL delivered gross revenue of ₹11,75,919 crore (~$124 billion) for FY2026, representing approximately 5.7% revenue growth and 10% EBITDA growth year-on-year. In FY2025, consolidated revenue was ₹10,71,174 crore ($125.3 billion), with a net profit (PAT) of ₹81,309 crore (~$9.5 billion). Consumer-facing businesses (Retail + Jio) now contribute over 50% of consolidated EBITDA, marking a structural shift away from pure hydrocarbons.

Leadership & Ownership

Mukesh Ambani, a chemical engineer and Stanford MBA, has led RIL since 1997 and has been on the board since 1977. He orchestrated the company's backward integration — from textiles → polyester → petrochemicals → refining → upstream E&P — and subsequently its forward leap into retail and digital services. His children Isha, Akash, and Anant Ambani all now serve on the board. Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) holds a significant ~6.79% institutional stake.

Strategic Priorities

RIL's stated growth agenda is organized around three pillars:

  • New Energy & Green Materials: Aggressive investment in solar, hydrogen, and advanced battery storage, aiming to build a 100 GW renewable energy capability

  • Jio Platforms expansion: 5G rollout across India, AI infrastructure, enterprise services, and digital commerce

  • Retail deepening: Expanding private label FMCG through Reliance Consumer Products Limited (RCPL), which crossed ₹22,000 crore revenue in FY26 with over twofold growth

RIL contributes approximately 20% of India's total export earnings and was the first privately owned Indian company to appear on the Fortune 500.
